Chris, 7, was diagnosed with leukemia. More than anything else, he wished to be a police officer. Caring people in his community granted his wish … and set in motion a phenomenon that would create an unprecedented kind of charity.
Our Mission: Make-A-Wish serves a unique, and vital, role in helping strengthen and empower children battling life-threatening medical conditions.
Today, hundreds of volunteers work one-on-one with children whose homelessness prevents them from getting the academic stability and help they desperately need. The heart of School on Wheels’ programs is the volunteer tutors who come from all backgrounds and professions, with a shared goal – to reach out to a child, to teach, to mentor, and assist in their educational life.
The mission of School on Wheels is to enhance educational opportunities for homeless children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with the highest level of education possible. Our program serves as a consistent support system to homeless students at a time of great stress and fear. We bring the message to our students that they are cared about and important.
We do this by offering:
- One-on-one weekly tutoring
- School supplies
- Assistance in entering school
- Help in locating lost records
- Guidance for parents in educational matters for their children
- A Learning Center located in the heart of Skid Row
The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
The mission is to end the cycle of youth homelessness throughout the United States.
StandUp For Kids is a national non-profit charity. Our organization was founded in 1990 by a group of volunteers in San Diego, CA. Starting from a program in one city, StandUp For Kids has grown to a national organization with operations in many states and the District of Columbia. We remain a nearly all-volunteer organization.
StandUp For Kids continuously strives to provide life-saving and outreach services to homeless, street kids and at-risk youth. StandUp For Kids is primarily a nighttime program, with volunteers walking the streets in the evening, distributing food, clothing, hygiene products, distributing resource information, referrals, and offering an 888 number where the kids can reach a StandUp For Kids counselor in each of our cities nationwide.
StandUp For Kids teaches youth the basic “life skills” so that they can survive off the streets, helping to build a foundation away from the streets and street life. Life skills focused on during the 2014 year are:
1. Anger Management Sessions
2. Increased tutoring services for GED, job hunting/resume building
3. Financial Management
4. Improving Communications
5. Study Skills
6. Goal Setting
7. Behavior Management Class
8. Social Events for homeless and at-risk youth/families
Stand Up To Cancer’s (SU2C) mission is to raise funds to accelerate the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.
SU2C brings together the best and the brightest researchers and mandates collaboration among the cancer community. By galvanizing the entertainment industry, SU2C has set out to generate awareness, educate the public on cancer prevention and help more people diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors.
Here we stand, on the verge of unlocking the answers that will finally conquer cancer.
Cancer takes one person every minute. One life in a moment. They are our brothers, our sisters, our fathers and mothers, our husbands and wives, our best friends, our children, ourselves. Every day in America 1600 people die despite the fact that the means to save them are literally within our reach. To wait any longer for someone else to save our lives and the lives of those we love is unforgivable. We must act now.
For the first time in history, we can envision the possibility of stopping cancer in its tracks. Now more than ever, as government funding for cancer research is disappearing from the national agenda, every single one of us affected by cancer must stand up and be heard.

Tutors for Charity Foundation
We exist to serve, defend and promote every student’s right to a high-quality, low-cost, compassionate, empathetic, fair, just and holistic education. We vow to protect students against abuse of power from teachers, staff and other school administrators, with a focus on at-risk, low-income and homeless students in order to give them the tools, inspiration, guidance and support they need to succeed!
1.To provide the highest quality, most affordable primary, secondary and supplemental education possible (ideally FREE!).
2.To serve as an advocate for student rights, and protector/defender of student justice and freedoms.
3.To focus on under-served students: low-income, homeless and at-risk of failing, dropping out (voluntary) or getting expelled (involuntary) from school.
Our Philosophy (Why We Do It)
Our founder, who was a tutor for hundreds of students from pre-K to high school, college and graduate school for over 15 years, was very disillusioned with the postgraduate education he received while attending medical school. He was shocked at how a school could take the country’s brightest, most hard-working students and essentially belittle them, talk down to them and abuse their power over students without any recourse the students had to protect themselves. Over the summer break he created an organization to serve and protect student rights – Tutors for Charity Foundation.
We exist to serve and promote every student’s right to a high quality, low cost, compassionate, just and holistic education. We realize that students suffer from a multitude of problems related to our broken educational system: overwhelmed with unnecessary academic course loads, suffer from mental and emotional abuse by over-worked teachers or administrators (e.g., being belittled, talked down to, ignored, ostracized, etc.), disappointed with large class sizes and lack of individualized attention, etc.
We have a firm belief and philosophy that centers around our Student Bill of Rights:
1) High-quality, affordable education is a fundamental, basic human right.
2) Every student deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, empathy and support.
3) Every student deserves to be FREE from bullying, regardless of the source. This includes being free from teachers and administrators who abuse their power, enact inappropriate disciplinary actions, make false accusations, or unfairly target or treat students for any reason.
4) Every student deserves to be FREE from schools that constantly commit educational malpractice. This includes schools that fraudulantly use tuition money to pay administrators high salaries while ignoring the learning needs of their students.
5) Students are not “just a number” and their self-worth is not based on their grades in class (we are all multi-faceted and can contribute to society in our own unique way).
6) Every student deserves a tutor or mentor who is patient, kind and genuinely cares about their life and well-being (beyond just academics).
7) Every tutor has a gift or talent they can share, and every student has the ability to learn and improve.
8) We will never give up on our students!
9) We strive to inspire our students to realize their dreams and achieve their goals!
10) We encourage lifelong learning to promote the next wave of innovation.
United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.
We all have a stake in what befalls our fellow man. We all benefit when a child succeeds in school, when someone finds a job that will help them provide for their family, or when more people are able to access quality, affordable health care.
The solutions we create for communities around the world go beyond short-term charity for a few. When United Way’s support for Community Schools helps increase the graduation rate in the Vallejo City Unified School District by 11 percent in just three years, it’s not just the students, or even just the families of those students who benefit. Those proud graduates now have a much better chance of landing a job that pays a livable wage, of staying out of trouble with the law, and of living longer, healthier lives — and that translates into a safer, healthier and more prosperous community for everyone.
We rise or fall together. With your support, we are reaching for great new heights.
